Whimsy: Flights of Fancy

May 1 - June 15

Thursday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm

Whimsical art is a visual expression of humor, playfulness, fantasy, or irony. Recognized as far back as the 17th century, the genre was named capriccio and defined as “a dreamlike interpretation of the subject of a work that comes from a free imagination.” Today, whimsy liberates the artist and the audience to communicate via imagery unconstrained by formal perspective or representational fealty in the service of lightheartedness, caprice and satire.

We welcome friends of Maine art to visit the show, share the joy, and find something to bring a smile to your home environment.

All Maine artists are eligible for juried entry and must comply with the linked Prospective/Call for Art entry deadlines and rules. Entry submission deadline is April 8.

Events:

  • Opening Reception: Saturday, May 10, 4:30pm - 6:30pm

  • Art Talk Panel: "Collage--the Sum of the Parts," June 5, 4pm - 6pm

Fiore at 100: Maine Observed

June 19 - August 24

Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm

Maine Art Gallery in collaboration with the Maine Farmland Trust presents an exclusive retrospective of the art of Joseph Fiore (1925 – 2008) during the 100th anniversary of his birth year. We are proud to reintroduce a rich vein of Fiore’s artistic legacy to the American public and to revive interest and investment in the stylistically diverse oeuvre of this quietly accomplished, but confidently distinctive American painter.

A Black Mountain College disciple who established a summer retreat on his farm in Jefferson, Maine in 1959, Fiore’s observations of the Maine landscape from empirical, abstract, and symbolic perspectives shaped the development of his work over the course of six decades. An avid environmentalist, and a benefactor of the Maine Farmland Trust, Fiore exhibited work alongside NYC colleagues Lois Dodd, Alex Katz, Charles DuBack and others of his generation at the Maine Art Gallery during its first decade. These artists helped establish a legacy of Maine art and artists that continues 67 years later.

The Exhibition is curated by Fiore’s former student and renowned Maine watercolorist, David Dewey. It will be on the first floor from June 19 – August 24. In keeping with the Gallery’s recent series of “Generations” exhibitions, the retrospective is accompanied by a juried members show of objective and non-objective work inspired by Maine landscapes mounted on the second floor from June 19 – July 27; followed by our annual Plein Air exhibit, Paint It! Maine, from July 31 – August 24.

Events:

  • Opening Reception and Summer Solstice Party: Saturday, June 21, 4:30pm - 6:30pm

  • Special Gallery Hours for exhibit: Wed. – Sun., 11am – 4pm

  • Open late Wiscasset ArtWalk Thursday, June 26, 4pm – 7 pm

Maine Observed: Juried Members Exhibit

June 19 - July 27

Wednesday - Sunday, 11am - 4pm

Generations of artists have been drawn to Maine inspired by its dramatic vistas of mountains, forests, fields, lakes and coastlines challenging each witness to capture their own version of the State’s natural wonder. As Rackstraw Downes described the landscape painter’s task: “A love of country is common to all of us to some degree, but who can make it work as fresh, contemporary painting imagery, free from the trite and the cliched?”

Member artists of the Maine Art Gallery are regularly engaged in this challenge and their work presents objective and non-objective expressions of the natural world of Maine they observe. Accordingly, we invite Gallery members to submit their finest efforts to capture the Maine vistas that inspire them in this juried show: Maine Observed: Juried Members Exhibit, mounted on the second floor, running from June 19 – July 27, Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 4 pm.

Original fine art in any media executing the theme may be submitted, including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography, fiber, jewelry, and sculpture.

Maine Art Gallery member artists should consult the linked Prospective/Call for Art for entry deadlines and rules. Expected deadline May 28.
Artists may become members in advance of entry by going to our Join or Donate page.

Events:

  • Opening Reception: Saturday, June 21, 4:30pm - 6:30pm

  • Open late Wiscasset ArtWalk Thursday, June 26, 4pm – 7pm.
