Paint It! Maine 2025: Call for Artists
A Plein Air Event
The Maine Art Gallery is hosting its annual plein air painting event with a twist by expanding its geographic scope to the entire state titling it, Paint It! Maine. Plein air artists from around the state are invited to enter sample images of their work to be accepted to participate in this exhibition.

Paintings for the exhibition may be created between July 1 – July 26. The exhibit itself runs on the gallery second floor from July 31 – August 24, 2025, and is parallel to the centenary retrospective of Joseph Fiore who was an accomplished plein air painter working in Maine, New York City’s Central Park and East River areas, and the Delaware Water Gap.

Cash prizes will be given to artists who win the show awards to be juried by [Name to be announced.]

Entries for consideration to be accepted for participation in this painting event may be submitted beginning May 12. Deadline for entries to participate: June 14th. Late entries will not be considered.

You will be notified by email on or before June 20 of your acceptance to participate. Accepted artists will have their names posted on our website and at the gallery.

Schedule for Accepted Artists:
Artists have their canvases stamped at the gallery: June 26 - 28, 11am –4pm
Plein air painting days: July 1 – July 26. Accepted artists are requested to paint a 4th of July event or subject in the town of their choosing and to display their Maine Art Gallery identification poster whenever they are painting with the intent to show in our exhibition.
Run of Show: Thursday, July 31 – Sunday, August 24
Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Sunday, 11am – 4pm
Reception during Art Walk: July 31, 4pm - 7pm
Drop off selected work with executed Consignment Agreement and Artist Statement/Bio: July 28 – July 29, 11am – 4pm;
Pick Up of Unsold Work: Sunday, August 24, 4pm – 6pm; August 25, 9am – 4pm
Entry Fee: $15 members, $25 non-members

Rules for Entry:
Submission of your entry fee constitutes your understanding of, and agreement to, the juried show guidelines and to the following conditions:

Original Art Only:
All work submitted during the qualification submission period must be your own original artwork. Plein air artists may work in oil, acrylic, watercolor or pastel.

New Work Only:
Work delivered for the hanging must be created during the Paint It! Maine days from July 1, 2025, and July 26, 2025.
​
Works Delivered for Hanging:
Each artist may submit two (or possibly more) works of art created during the painting days depending on size as considered acceptable by the Gallery Exhibition Committee representative, whose judgment is final. Work sold may be replaced by other work done during the plein air event with approval of the gallery representative. The Maine Art Gallery will refine the guidance on the number of canvases delivered for hanging at the time you are notified of your acceptance to participate and before canvases are stamped.

Show-Ready and Original Submissions Only:
Artists must have their canvases stamped at the gallery: June 26 - 28, 11am – 4pm or such subsequent time as arranged with a gallery representative during regular gallery hours. Subsequently, all works must be on officially stamped canvases or board, and show-ready upon delivery to the gallery.

Hanging Ready:
All artwork must be properly wired for hanging. Gallery wrapped canvases are acceptable. Sawtooth frame hangers are not acceptable.
​
Size Limits:
Two-dimensional work may not exceed 40" in either length or width, including frame.
​
Sales:
Maine Art Gallery takes a 35% commission of sales, and you have priced your work accordingly.
​
Entry Fee:
All entrants must pay a non-refundable $15 (members) or $25 (nonmembers) entry fee.

You grant Maine Art Gallery permission to use images of your artwork and/or your name in promotional materials, including broadcast, online media and other marketing materials.

Required Artist Consignment Agreement & Artist Bio:
Artist Statement/Bio and executed Consignment Agreement are required at time the work is dropped-off provided you have been accepted into the show.

3. Image Submission Requirements:
Attach jpeg files and send all required info to [EMAIL TO BE POSTED BY MAY 12]. Jpegs must be titled with your last name and title of the piece. Example: Coates-Summer-Greens. Images should be 1 to 3 megabytes in size. Recommended pixel size is about 900 width or height, but not to exceed 1,800 in either dimension.
