Description: Have a box of soft pastels in your studio that you never use or work in another media but want to jazz things up a bit? Bring your curiosity to experiment and your pastels to this hans on workshop, where we’ll be combing soft pastel with acrylic, watercolor or gouache; or a combination of all three. We’ll be experimenting with techniques to create atmospheric and landscape effects, as well as work with effects for still life, paying attention to how texture can be a tool for composition. More than a techniques class, we’ll be looking at color composition and have access to the Joseph Fiore exhibition as inspiration. The first day we’ll be inside, then (if weather permits), we’ll be working outside. Bring water, snacks and a bag lunch. About Jude Valentine: Jude completed her BFA at the Maine College of Art and MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She received numerous awards for her work including: Jerome Foundation Fellowship and an Individual Grant Award from the Council of Creative Arts, Cornell University. Artist residency awards have been many including: the Joseph Fiore Art Center at Rolling Acres Farm / Maine Farmland Trust. She teaches at USM. The intention of her printmaking and painting has been to bridge a connection to the landscape that translates a place from ‘out there’ to ‘in here’—creating a visual connection to place that is somatic and visceral. The focus of the paintings and prints are to place the viewer ‘within’—offering a connection to a quiet place. For more: judevalentine.com
